A delegation from the Shunde District Government of Foshan City, China visited Markham on Thursday afternoon, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and inaugurating the new Shunde Road.
Markham Mayor Mr. Xue Jiaping, led by Markham City Councillors Mr. Lee Kwok Yin, Mr. An Si Chuang, City Councillors Mr. Ho Ho King, Mr. Chiu Shan Jiang, and a six-member delegation led by Huang Hai, a member of the Standing Committee of Shunde District of China, signed the Memorandum of Understanding between Markham and China on Thursday afternoon at Markham City Council Chambers.
Huang Hai, a member of the Standing Committee of Shunde District of China, said he was pleased to sign the memorandum of understanding with the Markham City Government and hoped to strengthen the cooperative relationship in the future in terms of economy, trade, culture and science and technology.
The Mayor of Markham, Mr. Xue Jiaping, said that in order to show the sincerity of friendship between the two sides, the City of Markham has approved the completion of a road named Shunde Road, and thanked the Shunde District Government for ordering two phoenixes representing the symbols of Shunde as road markers, which will be permanently installed on Shunde Road in the future. Shunde Road is located in the upcoming “Wangfujing Shopping Center”, which will be an important landmark in Markham.
Markham City Councillor Ho Ho Keng said he was pleased to be able to facilitate the signing of the Sister Cities Memorandum of Understanding and the naming of a section of the road in his ward as Shunde Road, in the hope that more immigrants from Shunde and other cities in China will establish their homes in the area.
The unveiling ceremony was held at Wangfujing Mall at 5:30 p.m. on the 26th, attended by guests including Mayor of Markham, Mr. Gary Sit, and other councillors, as well as Consul General of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto Mr. Wei He, Consul Generals Mr. Baohua Yang and Mr. Chenliang Song, Representative of MPP Geng Tan, Assistant to MPP Fengyi Wu Ms. Jing Xu, and Assistant to the Minister of Trade and Industry Mr. George Chen Mr. Zheng Huang, among other guests.
Consul General He Wei congratulated on the inauguration ceremony of Shunde Road and praised the naming of Shunde Road as another solid step in China-Canada local exchanges. He said Shunde District has a developed economy, prosperous business, flourishing culture and education, and its comprehensive strength is among the highest in China, and it is called the “Gourmet Capital of the World”. Markham high-tech enterprises gathered, “Canadian high-tech center” reputation, is the Canadian headquarters of many multinational companies, but also to carry out cooperation with China is one of the most active Canadian cities. Shunde and Markham have their own advantages and strong complementarity, and the cooperation between the two sides is solid and effective. The inauguration of Shunde Road is not only a symbol of the friendly relationship between the two places, but also a new starting point for exchanges and cooperation between the two places. Mr. He emphasized that the Consulate General is willing to actively assist the two places to give full play to the potential of cooperation, promote economic and trade, science and technology and humanistic exchanges to go hand in hand, and strive to build a test bed for China-Canada local cooperation, so as to add bricks and mortar for the long-term friendship of the two countries.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of the Federal Government of Canada and Premier Wayne of Ontario sent congratulatory letters on the unveiling ceremony, praising the significance of the inauguration of Shunde Road to the construction of multiculturalism in Canada and the cause of Sino-Canadian friendship, and wishing for the flourishing cooperation between Markham and Shunde District
In the evening, the Shunde government hosted the Toronto Shunde Cuisine Night at the ”Shunfeng Villa” restaurant, and the guests and hosts had a great time. Both sides wished that through friendly cooperation and exchanges, Shunde and Markham will create a win-win situation in the fields of science and technology, innovation and culture.
Shunde Way is a new road, located in Markham, Ontario, with a total length of nearly 1 kilometer. Shunde District and Markham have been carrying out exchanges and cooperation for many years under the promotion of local overseas Chinese associations such as the Canadian Shunde Friendship Association and the Shunde Chamber of Commerce of Greater Toronto, Ontario. The unveiling of the Shunde Road in Markham is an important milestone in the deepening of the relationship between the two sides.
